St. Joseph of the Pines begins the New Year with two new members on its board of directors: Sharlene Anderson and Mike Erwin.

The board approved the new members last year. Anderson and Erwin, who filled open seats, will attend their first meeting on March 5.

“Sharlene and Mike embody the spirit of community and bring talent, expertise and energy to the table,” said Tim Buist, president at St. Joseph of the Pines. “We are very fortunate to have them by our side as we continue to strengthen the services we provide every day to the people that depend on us.”

Anderson is a Pinehurst attorney with a private practice and former corporate counsel for Novell, Inc. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development from Brigham Young University in 1996 and her Juris Doctor from BYU in 1999.

“I look forward to getting a closer look at the needs of the senior community in Moore County,” Anderson said. “One of the big issues now is long-term care. Often times, people don’t do the proper planning.”

Anderson said her practice “does a lot” of probate work and estate planning and administration.
“But it’s often after the fact,” she said. “I know that serving on the board will be very enlightening. And I think that I can bring some insight, because I’ve seen when it all goes wrong. This is something very near and dear to my heart.”

Erwin, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, is CEO of The Character & Leadership Center and co-founder and president of the Positivity Project, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower America’s youth to build positive relationships. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2002.

“In the past decade, technology has changed many things about our lives—but the need for human-to-human support remains more important than ever,” Erwin said. “I am both honored and excited to join the Board of Directors for an incredible organization that provides that human connection and assistance to people as they are growing older.”

St. Joseph of the Pines is an aging services network offering a full continuum of retirement housing, health care and community-based services for older adults as well as community outreach to those in need.

It is a Trinity Health Senior Community continuing the legacy of the Sisters of Providence.
